Conditions and Exclusions

There are some instances where we are unable to offer cover. We would recommend you read this document to ensure you are eligible for cover before obtaining a quote.

You can apply if you:

  • Employed or self-employed
  • Are aged between 18 and 64 (59 if choosing Breathing Space) and have at least 5 years until you plan to retire
  • Live in the UK and have done so for at least the last 3 years
  • Are registered with a UK doctor who has access to at least the last 3 years of your medical records
  • Are a UK tax payer and have a UK bank or building society account
  • Can prove a level of income to support the benefit selected (only if selecting BFS Protect)


Whilst we cover most occupations, we cannot offer cover for the below occupations, whether done on full or part-time, paid or unpaid or on a reserve basis, even if you hold another occupation. The excluded occupations are as follows:

  • Armed forces or merchant navy personnel, including members of a military reserve force
  • Occupations requiring the handling of explosives
  • Divers
  • Underground miners
  • Oil rig workers
  • Professional or semi-professional sports persons
  • Nightclub security personnel or bodyguards
  • Equestrian professions
  • Police officers including Police Community Support Officers and Special Constables
  • Fire-fighters including reserve or retained fire-fighters


There are also certain medical circumstances where we cannot provide cover for, these are as follows:

  • If you are currently unable to work or are working reduced hours or on restricted duties due to sickness or accident
  • If you have suffered from symptoms of chronic fatigue syndrome, ME or fibromyalgia in the last 2 years
  • If you have suffered from cancer or malignant tumour which has been treated with radiotherapy or chemotherapy in the last 3 years
  • If you are currently suffering from an illness for which you are being prescribed methotrexate or immunosuppressive treatment
  • If you have had a Stroke or mini Stroke (also known as Transient Ischaemic attack)
  • If you have had a heart attack
  • If you have suffered from or been diagnosed with angina or coronary heart disease
  • If you have suffered from or been diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis
  • If you have been diagnosed with Parkinson’s Disease
  • If you have been diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease or dementia
  • If you are suffering from paralysis, paraplegia or quadriplegia caused by damage to your spinal cord
  • If you have suffered from or been diagnosed with insulin-dependent diabetes (other than during pregnancy)
  • If you have been diagnosed with HIV or are awaiting the results of a HIV test
  • If you have undergone a major organ transplant
  • If your BMI is 41 or above
